Beginning Ceramics I is required unless approved in advance by the instructor. Meet the potter’s wheel! In this exciting beginning class students will learn the necessary “throwing” skills of centering, lifting, and shaping the clay as well as trimming the final form to create functional pottery. Mastering these basic skills will lead to your ability to create more complex and artistic forms. You will also learn to make and attach handles and further explore surface decoration and glazing techniques. Students will also be taught to “have an eye” for the proper aesthetics of good pottery. As in the first class, students will have an opportunity to glaze and fire their work to completion. |

Beginning Ceramics II |
|
Beginning Ceramics I and II are required unless approved in advance by the instructor. Whether you prefer hand-building or wheel-throwing, (or a combination of the two) beginning and continuing students will work on their skills with individual projects, ongoing instruction and experimentation. Hand-builders will explore the use of texture and will learn to incorporate other media into their pieces. Students of the potter’s wheel will learn to throw more complex forms and to work on a larger scale. All students will refine their techniques and gain further knowledge of aesthetics and the properties of clay, glazing and firing. Additionally: We will explore the history of this ancient art form with the viewing and discussion of actual antiquities from Egypt, the Middle East, South America and Mexico. |
